Wisconsin Fishing Licenses, Laws, and Regulations

There are more than 160 species of fish in the Wisconsin waterways and some of the most commonly caught are largemouth bass, black crappie, catfish, sea sturgeon, yellow bass, black bass, pike, pikeperch, and more. You can always fish on Lake Michigan in Lakeshore State Park or Half Moon Lake in Eau Claire for a more rural setting. Wherever you want to fish, you will need a fishing license to fish legally.

Wisconsin Fishing License Requirements

Wisconsin\’s fishing licenses are a way for the state\’s Department of Natural Resources to help control the impact of anglers on fish populations to help ensure a good fishing experience for future generations.

Before you go out to sea, you need to know the rules of fishing licenses to see if you need to buy them. Chances are, you will. That\’s because in Wisconsin, everyone over the age of 16 needs a fishing license to fish in any of the state\’s waters. This rule applies whether you are a resident or a non-resident.

Depending on the species you plan to fish for, you may also need stamp privileges. Specifically, if you plan to fish, you must have seal privileges:

Trout or Salmon:

If you plan to fish for trout or salmon in inland waters, you will need an inland trout stamp privilege, and if you plan to fish for trout or salmon in inland waters, you will need a Great Lakes Trout and Salmon stamp privilege, available on Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Green Bay, and streams that flow into Green Bay and Lake Michigan from the estuary until the first dam or lake.

Lake Sturgeon:

If you plan to fish for lake sturgeon, you must first purchase an inland label suitable for inland water and Lake Superior sturgeon fishing and/or a Wisconsin/Michigan boundary water suitable for sturgeon fishing on the Menominee River Label.
Be sure to bring your fishing license with you when you go out to sea as you should be able to show your fishing license to the keeper upon request.

Exemptions from Wisconsin fishing license requirements

Certain anglers are exempt from Wisconsin fishing license requirements. These include:

Disabled groups on fishing trips by non-profit organizations exempted from the Department of Natural Resources
Those who fish on Wisconsin\’s free fishing weekend, which is the first consecutive Saturday and Sunday in June each year and the third consecutive Saturday and Sunday in January each year
Even if you\’re not exempt from having to purchase a Wisconsin fishing license, some anglers have discounted license options available, which we\’ll discuss next.

Where to buy your fishing license

You have several convenient options for purchasing a Wisconsin fishing license. If you plan to buy online, you will need a valid driver\’s license or social security number.

Online:

You can purchase licenses on the Department of Natural Resources website gowild.wi.gov. If you do not have an account to purchase the license, you will need to log in to your account or create a new one. This option also allows you to update your license online.

License Agent:
